Secret 7"

I'm beyond thrilled that my work was selected for Secret 7” to be featured on the album cover of Jeff Buckley's "Lover You Should've Come Over"

Secret 7" selects 7 tracks from 7 of the best-known musicians around (this year includes songs by Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix, and The Clash) and presses each one 100 times to vinyl. They then invite creatives from around the world to interpret the tracks in their own style.

This year the unique sleeves are exhibited and being auctioned off to benefit Mind UK, a mental health organization that helps half a million people in England and Wales annually. The 2018 exhibition is being held at The Jetty, Greenwich Peninsula, in London and is sponsored by Sony Music and Squarespace.

Artists' Book Cornucopia VII

I'm thrilled to have my book "Child of the Moon" selected to be included in the exhibition Artists' Book Cornucopia VII.

The seventh in an annual series of international juried exhibitions of contemporary artists' bookworks, Artists' Book Cornucopia VII includes work by 40 artists from the United States, Canada and Argentina. The series highlights a broad spectrum of works created under the artists book work umbrella, with unique sculptural works exhibited alongside more traditionally bound and printed works.

This year's selections were made by Margery N. Sly, Director of Special Collections and Kimberly Tully, Rare Book Curator, Samuel L. Paley Library, Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The exhibition runs from September 16 through October 29, 2016.

Circles

Why circles? I don't really know...
An ode to Calder? No corners? Small worlds? Black holes? The great wide open?

The above selection of woodblock prints are part of my MFA Thesis Exhibition, End Page: Books and Works on Paper by Kate Castelli, now open at Fourth Wall Project in Boston.

Indigo

The cure for anything is salt water-- sweat, tears, or the sea. (Isak Dinesen)

In 1837, according to the date on the inside cover, a girl named Georgiana tore this end paper and stitched it back together again. She repaired her book and made it better in more ways than one. The 19th century fast forwards to the 21st century and I add a sea of indigo marks.

Collaborative Circles

Caroline Board and I sat down one day in the printshop and cut up all sorts of proofs, ghost prints, and experimental prints to make this latest collaborative book. We completed it in one afternoon.

In addition to our collaborative books, we've printed our first collaborative edition! The venn diagram inspired print was created after we each carved one side of a circular woodblock. My side is printed in yellow ochre and Caroline's is black.

This print is currently on view at the Atrium Gallery at SMFA as part of the juried Print and Paper Show.

Our collaborative books and prints will be on view during our thesis show at Fourth Wall Project  April 16-27th.

AIB Massachusetts Avenue Storefront Art Project

I was thrilled to be selected to be part of AIB Massachusetts Avenue Storefront Art Project to celebrate the Centennial of AIB. Artists were paired with local businesses along Mass Ave in Cambridge (AIB's future home) to install work in their storefronts. I was lucky to be paired with Abodeon, a mid 20th century and current modern design store. It was the perfect window to install my piece, One Hundred Chairs.

To find out more about the Massachusetts Avenue Storefront Art Project visit http://storefrontartproject.wordpress.com/

And you can read the press release here.

You can visit Abodeon at 1731 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA.

There will be a celebratory walk about happening on Thursday September 20th, from 4-5pm followed by an opening reception from 5-7pm at University Hall, 1815 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA.

Paper Chairs

I'm pleased to be showing some new work at Cafe Nomad through the end of June. The show consists of my recent exploration into papermaking and features my ever so familiar subjects-- chairs.

The Fauteuil* series (including the two pieces pictured above) are pulp paintings. The triptychs are made of sheets of handmade cotton paper. I painted directly into the wet paper pulp with pigment before pressing them. The result is a unique surface in which the image is imbedded into the paper fiber itself.

Proof of Purchase

I'm pleased to be participating in Proof of Purchase, a show to benefit the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. You can purchase "Above and Below," one of my pieces from the Pages series (above).

How could I resist a show of postcards?

Hunt through hundreds of original works by artists and Boston personalities, each for sale at the bargain price of $50. The twist? You don't know the identity of the artist until you make the purchase. With all the art priced ($50) and sized (4x6 inches) the same, the piece you fall in love with might be by a current student or by a famous artist.

SPQR

This is a project I've been working on as part of a print exchange between the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Edinburgh College of Art.

The concept was for 50 select students and faculty on each side of the Atlantic to construct a pair of boxes with the dimensions of 5x8x1" The material, medium, and contents were completely open, but under the general title of Transatlantic Fun-o-Pack. One box will remain in the permanent collection of each school.

After a couple of false starts, I was still at a loss for what I wanted to make for this show. I've been thinking about Rome lately and after finishing the edition of Roman Faces, I decided to make the box about Rome (which was my last Transatlantic journey...)

The box is a drop lid structure made out of bookboard and covered in fine weave linen bookcloth. The color reminded me of the buildings in Rome. The cover and interior tray are lined with vintage architectural drawings of the Pantheon.

Each box contains an edition of the small book Roman Faces, a plaster hand (one of several I bought as "relics" in a shop near the Vatican), and a panoramic accordion book of Rome.

The panorama was created by combining half a dozen sketches from my sketchbook. I created a litho plate of the final composition and printed the image in red. The covers are bound in a hand marbled paper purchased in Rome. The overall dimensions of the book are 17 x 5.25" (opened).

SPQR is from the Latin phrase Senātus Populusque Rōmānus or "the Senate and People of Rome", an ancient abbreviation used as the modern emblem for the city of Rome.
