The Boston Printmakers is pleased to announce the 8th Arches Student Print Exhibition. The student exhibition, sponsored by the Arches Paper Company, will be shown in conjunction with The Boston Printmakers’ North American Print Biennial at the Boston University 808 Gallery, Boston.The first seven Arches Student Exhibitions, held biannually starting in 1999, were a resounding success with participation by 20 - 25 New England art schools, colleges and university printmaking departments.

"We began as neighbors at the studio in the MFA program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. In the first year our paths crossed frequently in courses, lectures, and critique. Out of frustration in the studio during the summer we began to work collaboratively on a small-scale book. We both enjoyed the process and it laid the foundation to work collaboratively on books, prints, and drawings during our final year in the program. We decided to show together for our thesis not only because of the collaborative work, but also because our sensibilities and visual language compliment each other. Fragments, memory, and the duality of presence and absence are all strong elements in both our work.

Showing together continues the collaboration we have inside and outside of the studio. There are distinct voices in both bodies of work, but together they engage in a conversation about constructing the fragments of memory and observation into something new. "

Collaborative Circles

Caroline Board and I sat down one day in the printshop and cut up all sorts of proofs, ghost prints, and experimental prints to make this latest collaborative book. We completed it in one afternoon.

In addition to our collaborative books, we've printed our first collaborative edition! The venn diagram inspired print was created after we each carved one side of a circular woodblock. My side is printed in yellow ochre and Caroline's is black.

This print is currently on view at the Atrium Gallery at SMFA as part of the juried Print and Paper Show.

Collaboration #5

Caroline Board and I just keep making books.

Collaboration No. 3

Caroline Board and I decided to keep going with our collaborative books. This third one is a small little book (each panel is 3x3") and we worked on both sides. Oh..and it glows in the dark, because why not?

Collaboration No. 2

As soon as Caroline Board and I finished the first book we started on a second collaboration. This one took about half the time and immediately felt more cohesive as it progressed. There is a little bit of everything incorporated into this book: monoprinting, ink, acrylic, collage, and hand-stitching.

It's been a great experience to work back and forth on these books throughout the summer. And I am looking forward to showing with Caroline in the Spring at our thesis show.

Book-a-week: Collaboration

And now for something completely different...

For the last month or so I've been working on a collaborative book with my friend Caroline Board (see her work at http://carolineboard.com). I started on the first panel and then would leave it in her studio and we passed it back and forth over the weeks. We finished it up last week and right after I attached the covers we decided that we didn't like the first four panels as much as we liked the last four panels, so...we cut the book in half!

It's been a good experience working back and forth this way, and we've just started a new book, so stay tuned.
