Haruki Murakami: Men without Women

Out today across the globe...Men without Women by Haruki Murakami
"Dreams are the kinds of things you can … borrow and lend out."

"Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. There are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all."

The fabulous design team at Vintage Books wrote a blog post about the cover process, you can check out what they have to say here and read the official release from Penguin Books UK!

And check out the story behind "The Frequency of Falling," the print used on the cover!

Child of the Moon (take 2)

{Sketchbook page of the final page layout}

It started with last year's submission to the Sketchbook Project. That book felt like a rough draft of something bigger. I wanted to combine sketches, images of the moon, lyrics from the 1968 Rolling Stones song "Child of the Moon," and prints into a process book of sorts for the series of circle woodblocks I have been working on for the last few years.

This summer I changed the format to a square and sourced some new images of the moon from a NASA publication, but the book was still lacking something. So I put the project aside for a while.

{pages 4-5} a vellum overlay of a horizon diagram from Bruno Munari's "The Circle" (1964)

{pages 6-7} A spread with one of the cropped pages featured original prints, and images from a 1970 NASA publication.

When I began working on it again, I decided to use the mechanical wire binding to my advantage. I included vellum overlays with scientific and philosophical diagrams, I inserted cropped pages to reveal and obscure content, and I decided to include more original prints. The result was much more dynamic than the first two "drafts" and felt like an authentic process book that reflected the ideas I was interested in.

From the archives...

I recently rediscovered this print from 2013-- it's a variation on some prints ("The Hard Way" and "The Known Universe") that were included in my MFA thesis show. But this particular one has never seen the light of day. Reminds me of a venn diagram, and there is something intriguing about the overlapping of the circles.

Purple Process

I've been feeling like my circle prints were reaching an end, and that I needed to go out with an ambitious final series. I very rarely print in color, and I very rarely make editions. However reduction prints are so uniquely time consuming (and self destructive) that I felt I needed to do an edition.

The woodblocks are 10" in diameter and are printed in 4 colors. I printed the first layer and then cut away each successive layer to reveal the color underneath. The layers cannot be reprinted, as each new series of marks changes the surface. At first I thought of the marks as gathering clouds or a storm front, but the layers of color now remind me of a small galaxy or the city lights at night.

Purple on the press and purple on my feet...my studio shoes matched the very vibrant layer 2.

Tiny Little

I finally printed some of the woodblocks I've been working on these past few months. I spent several hours up to my elbows in ink and circles, listening to bootleg Rolling Stones albums from the 1970s. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday...

The Defeated

Beyond surprise, my ribs start up from the ground.
After I had sunk, the waters went down.
The horizon I was making for runs through my eyes.
It has woven its simple nest among my bones.

Circles

Why circles? I don't really know...
An ode to Calder? No corners? Small worlds? Black holes? The great wide open?

The above selection of woodblock prints are part of my MFA Thesis Exhibition, End Page: Books and Works on Paper by Kate Castelli, now open at Fourth Wall Project in Boston.

Collaborative Circles

Caroline Board and I sat down one day in the printshop and cut up all sorts of proofs, ghost prints, and experimental prints to make this latest collaborative book. We completed it in one afternoon.

In addition to our collaborative books, we've printed our first collaborative edition! The venn diagram inspired print was created after we each carved one side of a circular woodblock. My side is printed in yellow ochre and Caroline's is black.

This print is currently on view at the Atrium Gallery at SMFA as part of the juried Print and Paper Show.

Our collaborative books and prints will be on view during our thesis show at Fourth Wall Project  April 16-27th.
