My favorite color.
Or some might argue it is not a color at all, but a lack there of.
Matisse once wrote, "Black is a color in itself, one that sums and consumes all others."
It is both additive and subtractive.
It both defines and obscures.
It is as constant as the depths of the night, or the pupils of the eyes of someone you love.
It is the lifeblood of the artistic gesture-- the line drawn, the brush mark, the photographic depth.
It is one end of the spectrum.
