Iterations

Two more iterations. Sumi ink wash on Khadi paper, 4x6"

I've spent three nights in a row listening to the Rolling Stones and doing chair studies. I loose track of time and the pile grows...

I'm thinking of doing 100.  Just because.

I'd love to hang them all in a grid in a gallery space. Just rows and rows of chairs. I am intrigued by multiples, variations, and iterations.

Trois

Three chair studies of the bistro chairs on the High Line in Chelsea, NYC. Sumi ink wash on Khadi paper (a wonderfully thick cotton rag paper made in India). 4x6 inches each.

I did about a dozen and half chair studies last night listening to the rain and the Rolling Stones.

I like doing these ghost chairs, but I don't know what to do with them. They seem to be a departure from my usual. This is not a bad thing, it is just a challenge to reconcile them with the other work I am doing.

Rainy summer days are perfect for reading Jane Eyre, watching North by Northwest, drinking coffee, and drawing chairs. Rainy days are always productive studio days.

I'm still here.

I know I've been absent of late. What am I doing? A good question. A summary of my summer state of mind...

Iris Murdoch / nectarines / new bike / sketchbooks / iced coffee / Tokyo / Tea at the Taj / heat wave / Emeco 111 Chairs / linocuts / making books / Picasso at the Met / backyard BBQs / farmers markets / Othello in the Park / Federico Fellini / Jane Eyre / silver shoes / sunflowers / SOWA / grad school

The above photo is a glimmer of map I did recently. I have been trying to figure out what I am actually doing in my work. So I took a 6 foot long piece of brown scrap paper and started writing. In the process I realized I know more than I thought I did...

Interview

Author Daniel Rabuzzi has posted an interview with yours truly over at his blog, Lobster and Canary. So see what I have to say about sketchbooks, the Rolling Stones, and playing chess with Duchamp...

I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel and his wife, the master woodcarver, Deborah Mills, this past winter. Daniel's first novel, The Choir Boats, was published in the summer of 2009.

Thank you Daniel!
