Places to see

When I was little I wrote down a list of 10 places to see before I die. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have crossed off 3 of those places by the time I was 21-- London, Paris, and Australia. Part of me wants to edit or change the list, but there is something a little sacred about the journeys I dreamt of taking when I was small.

I've been to places not on the list, I will be to many more. But the list remains.

I love to travel and to wander. It is not restlessness, but the desire to see and feel and experience. And be reminded of my sincerely insignificant part of something much greater.

There is so much left to see.

From the Archives

At the Alexander Calder show at the Whitney they had a "self portrait" by Calder at age 9. I thought it was remarkable that it survived, and was amused that they included it in the exhibition.

I was back home this weekend and went digging around in the archives and came across some "early work."

Enjoy.

This one is quite epic. And I am almost certain it was inspired by Disney's Fantasia, which I loved as a child.

In case you were wondering, it is obviously a herd of Centaurs. Seriously.

I think this one is a nice example of an early attempt to "mat" my work. Also note the mermaid's bra. Actually, now that I see the hair color this is most certainly Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

Both are age 4ish?

Calder at the Whitney

My increasing wanderlust + a not to miss Alexander Calder retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art = a short and very cold trip to NYC today.

A sampling of songs from a long train ride:
1. Cab / Train
2. Winter / The Rolling Stones
3. Dark Eyes / Iron and Wine with Calexico
4. When Doves Cry / The Be Good Tanyas (amazing cover)
5. Empty / Ray LaMontagne
6. Bohemian Like You / The Dandy Warhols
7. Cemeteries of London / Coldplay
8. The Way We Get By / Spoon
9. Child of the Moon / The Rolling Stones
10. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses / U2

Something better beginning

I'm feeling a certain kinship with the Dadaists lately. They understood the absurdity and the beauty in this world.
